HEADLINE: TRU Students Produce Digital Media Kit as Learning Assessment

SUBHEADING: Students in Media and Public Relations class at TRU get hands-on experience building a digital media kit that builds their professional portfolio

DATELINE: Kamloops, BC – September 9, 2020

BODY:

Students in a media and public relations class at TRU are about to get hands-on public relations experience creating a digital media kit as a course assignment.  This assignment, rolling out in Fall 2020, will offer students the opportunity to hone their skills in building a media kit, an important public relations document, in an online context. As a result of this project, students will begin to develop their own portfolio of PR work, putting them on the path to employability as PR professionals.

SPOKESPERSON: The assignment, created by Dr. Joceline Andersen, an assistant teaching professor at Thompson Rivers University (TRU), grew out of a series of workshops on the transition to online learning. Andersen, who joined TRU in 2020 and teaches in the PR stream in the Communication, Journalism, and New Media department, thought this was an important task for students to undertake. “Digital media kits have almost wholly replaced print media kits,” said Andersen.  “Using digital tools to create a final product that includes links and responds to the increasing desire for companies to tailor their image through owned media like blogs better prepares students for the realities of today’s press releases.”

A recent white paper from post-secondary association Colleges Ontario on The Future of Ontario’s Workers emphasized the importance of preparing students for the digital workplace through building online skills. Practicing these skills by building a digital media kit will equip students to produce work that employers are seeking from digitally-literate graduates entering public relations positions.
